B i o g r a p h y

Guitarist Austin Wahl was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1993. From 1998 to 2011, he studied with Alan Johnston, a former member of the Minneapolis Guitar Quartet, at the MacPhail Center for Music. In May of 2015, he earned his Bachelor of Music with Distinction and Performer's Certificate at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, studying with Nicholas Goluses. Starting in the fall of 2015, he continued his studies at Eastman with Dr. Goluses toward a Master of Music degree, completed in May 2017. In the fall of 2017 he continued study  with Dr. Goluses towards the Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the Eastman School. 

He has also studied privately with Thomas Viloteau, Kristian Anderson, Kenneth Meyer, Dieter Hennings, Matthew Slotkin, and David Crittenden.

 

Currently, Wahl teaches Suzuki and traditional classical, acoustic, and electric guitar, as well as mandolin lessons at the Kanack School of Music in Rochester, NY. Please visit www.kanackschoolofmusic.com for more information.

 

As a classical guitarist, Wahl has performed in masterclasses as a soloist for Leo Brouwer, David Russell, Manuel Barrueco, Matteo Mela, Lorenzo Micheli, Grisha Goryachev, Roland Dyens, the Paris Guitar Duo, Anton Baranov, Sharon Isbin, Raphaella Smits, Benjamin Verdery, Eliot Fisk, Michael Partington, Joseph Pecoraro, David Madsen, Matthew Ardizzone, Petar Kodzas, and Evan Drummond.

 

As a member of the MacPhail Guitar Quartet (Austin Wahl, Xavier Jara, Henry Johnston, and Luke Banchy), Wahl has also performed in masterclasses for SoloDuo and the Eden/Stell Guitar Duo.

 

Additionally, as a bluegrass guitarist, Wahl performed for acclaimed banjoist Béla Fleck at the Eastman School in February of 2016 with bluegrass band Great Vagrant. For more information, please visit https://soundcloud.com/great-vagrant.

In February 2014, Wahl won the biennial Eastman Guitar Concerto Competition, and subsequently performed Rodrigo's Fantasia para une Gentilhombre with orchestra in the Eastman School of Music's Kilbourn Hall. Previously in December of 2011, he received an honorable mention as a freshman, competing with Castelnuovo-Tedesco's Guitar Concerto in D. 

 

He was also selected  by public popular vote as one of five Showcase Round Artists in Minnesota Public Radio's inaugural Minnesota Varsity competition for young musicians in 2011.

 

Wahl received his Book 1 Suzuki Method teaching certification from Mary Lou Roberts in Ann Arbor, Michigan, in 2012. He received his Book 2 certification from Andrea Cannon in Spring, Texas, in 2015. 

 

He performs on a guitar by Lubos Naprstek (USA).
